The 2015 Wedding Season Is Officially In Full Swing

Trista and Sam’s Rustic country wedding took place in Ridgefield Washington at Lucy’s Garden.

Lucy’s is nestled in the heart of Ridgefield, Washington on five acres of family owned and operated property that features a large and luscious garden with  a charming water feature and pond, a dazzling landscaped yard and gazebo, and an amazing big red party barn that is the highlight of the event experience.  Lucy’s Garden sets itself apart from most other event facilities because of the vast flexibility the venue has in creating a unique and personal theme for each and every event.

Trista is an avid quilter so she carried the theme thru in all the décor. Her bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and centerpieces were a combination of White Peony, Dusty Miller, Purple Matsomoto Asters, Lavender Roses, Blue Belladonna, Thistle, Green Hydrangea, Limonium, Wax Flower and of course Baby’s Breath. All the pieces were wrapped in quilting fabric strips that Trista provided.

We also used a combination of painted tin cans, beer bottles with chalk writing for the table names and fabric squares to reflect the same home spun charm.

The day turned out to be an unexpected sunny day and an equally wonderful and unexpected surprise to see this venue for the first time.

Hopefully, not the last…..

Congratulations to Trista & Sam on getting hitched!

Megan & Kurt’s Winter Woodland Wedding

Megan and Kurt’s ceremony took place at The Resort at the Mountain in Welches, Oregon.

Our talented prop designers created a beautiful and natural ceremony arch lit with hundreds of romantic tiny white lights. Warm light was added at the base of the arch and ceremony aisle with candles, lanterns and petals to give the feeling of a gentle evening winter night.

Table centerpieces had even more candles placed on Alder rounds with all white floral arrangements of white Hydrangea, ivory and white Roses and Seeded Eucalyptus. The head table centerpieces were designed on long split Alder logs to add a new shape and variety to their woodland theme.

All of the items, including a 24” Fir slab for the wedding cake were rented from our inventory of wedding rental items we have to offer. We love to help or clients create their wedding vision by creating new and beautiful décor that will set the tone for their unique wedding vision.

“The evening was beautiful and just what they had envisioned!”

How To Select The Right Florist For Your Wedding Day!

Here is an excellant article written by Jamie Watson for Portland Party Bus on selecting the right florist for your wedding day and what you can do to prepare for the process.

Wedding Florist:

There is nothing quite like the perfect floral arrangements to really bloom your wedding into a beautiful occasion. It is not surprising that selecting the arrangements are a crucial part of the planning process, and why it is vital to be thorough in your search and interviewing. Portland is abundant in wonderful florists who are more than capable of crafting the arrangements that will help complete the vision of your dream wedding. Here are some tips to guide you on the path to the right florist.

You may have a preferred local florist which has had your patronage for decades, but you may be surprised to find out that they don’t service or specialize in weddings, and the florist may not have any experience with weddings. It is imperative to hire an experienced florist as it only ensures the simplicity of coordination and the overall quality of your wedding day. It is wise to set up an interview with at least three different florists. Start with the recommendations of your family and friends, and search Google and online wedding directories. Be sure to read through any pricing and general information provided, as well as reviews and bridal testimonials, and scour through any pictures.

Once you have set up interviews with the candidates, you will want to come prepared with questions, fabric samples, and pictures of arrangements you like. It is advisable to start researching wedding flowers, and saving pictures of arrangements you like before you contact any florists. If you have a smart phone, download the Pinterest app, and start a wedding board where you can archive arrangements that dazzle you so you can share the board URL with your florist, cake designer, and so on. The florist should be cooperative, and be receptive to your ideas. You should be able to build a personal connection with this florist. Ask the candidates if they have worked the venues you have booked for the occasion, regardless of their answer they should be willing to visit the site with you. Familiarity helps develop ideas into realities. One thing you will want to do is scope out the shop. If it is a mess, unorganized, or if they flowers are in poor condition, that lack of attention to detail in presentation may reflect in the end product of your arrangements.

At some point, perhaps during the second interviews with each candidate that goes beyond the first stage of interviews, you will want to cover the cost of the package. Ask for a sample invoice. You will want to see what they will charge you for, there’s no need for surprise charges on the day of your wedding when you pay the rest of the balance due. You should compare prices between different candidates, and weigh carefully which one will give you the most for your money. Once you have made your final decision, place a deposit, and write up a contract that outlines every single detail. Once both parties sign, you should have no anxiety about the appearance of your arrangements, because you’ve done your due diligence and found the right florist for you. Don’t forget to smell the roses on the day of your wedding!

Daisies and Baby’s Breath Wedding

So Simple and sweet!

White Daisy Mums and Baby’s Breath bridal bouquets wrapped with lace and twine give such a vintage feel.  The ceremony arrangements include white Hydrangea and Larkspur with a coordinating twine band.  Baby’s Breath clusters line the aisle at the beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.  Our bride provided her own mason jars decorated with burlap and twine. A Floral Affair added the same white Daisies and Baby’s Breath for the centerpieces.

The Aerie at Eagle Landing Reception In ‘The Cave’

This weekend we finally had the pleasure of providing reception flowers in The Cave, at one of our favorite wedding venues, The Aerie at Eagle Landing in Happy Valley, Oregon.

This area is a charming and rustic hideaway nested in a grove of trees just behind The Aerie at Eagle Landing’s Putt-Putt golf course.  The Cave is a perfect hideout for those wanting a private and distinctly northwest outdoor setting.  With multiple fire pits and plenty of seating, this space can host an intimate group or a crowd to party the night away.  You can take full advantage of the surroundings by hosting a friendly golf tournament on the Par 3 or Mini golf course.

Our client wanted to create a romantic garden feeling with the rustic flair that The Cave has to offer.  We used her mercury glass vases and created a soft romantic look using white hydrangea, creamy white dahlias, Queen Ann’s lace, blush pink roses, peach stock and green hanging amaranthus.  For the buffet we embellished her vase with a bark wrap which had just the perfect place to carve their initials.  One of the great staff at The Aerie, Nathen and his trusty pocket knife, helped me to add the perfect finishing detail.  Thanks Nathen!

Today we received an email from the bride with this comment: “The flowers were amazing!!  You did such a great job.  Thank you again. They were everything I hoped for and more.  The one with the bark was amazing!”

Wedding Traditions

Have you ever noticed how many traditions are associated with weddings? Traditions include not seeing the bride in her wedding dress before the ceremony; the father daughter dance at the reception; something borrowed, something blue; and so many more.  Have you ever wondered where some traditions come from?  In many countries a boutonniere on the groom is a symbol of fertility.  It is a German tradition for flower girls to sprinkle petals down the aisle for good luck.  Many couples are choosing to incorporate more traditions from their heritage to honor ancestors.

A popular trend for brides with themes from the British Isles include bouquets of wildflowers and wearing flower garlands in the hair for Irish maidens; Welsh brides carry myrtle; and Scottish lasses include blue thistle and heather.

Tropical themes can get played up with tropical flowers like protea, orchids, or antherium.  Hawaiian men wear a Maile Lei while Thai men where a Puang Maloi Garland to promote fertility and act as protection against malevolent spirits.  Incorporating leis are a perfect way to carry the tropical theme.

June is the time of year when many of us celebrate graduation and Father’s Day.

Gifts for Graduation

Tropical flowers such as Orchid Lei’s have become almost as common as wearing a graduation cap and gown for men and women.  At A Floral Affair we offer 2 sizes of Orchid Lei’s:
Single for $36.00, Double for $54.00 (assorted colors available)

A beautiful hand tied presentation bouquet designed in your graduate’s favorite flower or school colors would surely make them feel extra special on the big day.

Red Ginger and beautiful Pin Cushion Protea are also great additions to create a stunning yet manly floral display. Phalonopsis Orchid, Cymbidium Orchid and Dendrobium Orchids are available in many shades such as soft subtle whites and green to vibrant shades of purple and orange. There are also masculine shades of yellow to deep rich shades of gold and rust.  Tropical floral arrangements are priced as follows:
Beginning at $65.00 each, with a good average being between $85.00 and up.

If your dad works hard every day at a desk a long lasting succulent garden or terrarium can also be a great gift for Father’s Day. These can be designed in a nice ceramic container or a more modern glass terrarium bowl. Both of these choices require very little care or water.

Memorial Flowers and Funeral Flowers

The passing of a friend, colleague, or family member is never easy and at a time of bereavement, we often struggle with what to say.  Words can be difficult to express our sympathy to those who have lost someone.  Flowers are a beautiful way to let them know you are thinking of them and are a gentle reminder you care.

There are many options to take into consideration when choosing flowers for funerals, memorials, and internments.

If you are ordering an arrangement to convey sympathy to friends or colleagues, they may be arrangements of favorite flowers, traditional “mourning” flowers, or even a fruit basket.  You may choose a floral arrangement in a vase or mounted on a standing easel.

When planning a funeral, you will need to take into consideration if it is a casket or urn; memorial or church service; and indoor gathering or outdoor internment.  Let us help you through these difficult decisions.  We will work with you to honor loved ones.
